Every 5 years, the documenta in Kassel attracts about 900,000 visitors from all around the world. It is the world's most influential exhibition of contemporary art and amazes culturally-interested tourists, art students, collectors and artists year after year. 1,500 international exhibits and over 160 participating artists give Kassel a unique flair.
The first documenta took place in 1955. Ever since then, it has been showcasing contemporary art, impressing an international audience. It rose to such fame that a 2nd documenta location was opened in Athens.
documenta exhibition venues are spread across the city. The most famous venues are probably the Fridericianum museum and the documenta hall, which was especially built for this event. Many other museums participate in the documenta, with a programme as diverse as the exhibition grounds.
The works of art displayed during the documenta are as diverse as their creators - huge paintings meet small and fragile artwork, the art of photography meets the art of painting, sculptures meet vivid live performances. A temple of books is being built, Ai Weiwei creates a 12-metre high wooden tower that is torn down by a storm. The documenta transforms the city into a huge canvas for the participating artists - we are looking forward to the pogramme of the upcoming documenta 2022!
